Well, we didn't do all of it ourselves. We had contractors install the new whirlpool tub (squeal!) and hubby did the electrical part and we redid the rest ourselves!

Since we moved when I was pregnant, I just tried to decorate it as best I could with whatever colors were already there:
And after a long couple of weeks... welcome to my private escape!!!

We decided to eventually replace all our cabinets (finances wouldn't allow it right now :( ) so we just got new hardware and I painted the cabinets above the toilet to white so it wasn't so brown. I was so tired of seeing brown!!
And you want to know a secret??? We did not remove the fugly tanish brown tiles from the walls!! We used cement adhesive and just put the beaded wainscoting right over it! Voila! Easy peasy!
Still want to replace the light fixture, get a new mirror and some crown molding but all in good time!! For now, I have my bathroom back and the icky nasty window is gone so no more water damage and mildew! Yay for a private relaxing escape!!! :)

ReplyDeleteYour new bathroom looks great! It looks like a spa. My husband and I are troubleshooting our yellow and green tiled bathroom. Like yours, our tile goes halfway up the wall. We really like the idea of putting beadboard up, but I worry about how to prep the tiles for it and if there are mold/mildew concerns? (Especially between the tile and the panels) Did you paint the beadboard with a mildew-resistant paint? I'm encouraged to see that this is a do-able DIY project with such nice results. Thanks!

To answer your questions; Our tiles were OLD and icky. We just did a quick good clean of it and that was all. No special prep. We just used cement adhesive and so far the beadboard has not come undone and trust me, we take some hot steamy showers here! It has not budged at all!
I'll let you in on a itty bitty secret. Bad me never got around to painting the beadboard, but yes, I highly HIGHLY recommend doing so and using the paint one would use for a bathroom (gloss/semi-gloss with mildrew resistant paint). So far I haven't had any problems and we got the pre-primed beadboard so it's ready to be painted.
After weeks of not having the use of the bathroom and having had twin infants at the time, I just wanted to have a functioning bathroom again! The babies outgrew their baby bathtub we used in the kitchen sink and were drenching the kitchen each time when getting a bath lol
So anyway, months after we've completed the bathroom, I have still not painted the beadboard, but it is going to happen!! --One day! ;)

ReplyDeleteThanks for the fast reply! I realized that I forgot to post my addy. It's great to hear that you've had such good results. Even higher praise to you for doing it with your twins! I was worried at first but I think we are going to do this. Previously, we considered re-glazing but it's expensive and I don't think I like the idea of all white tile and grout. Plus, the floor is in good shape but would wind up look dingy next to new shiny white coated tiles. I'm impressed that those are just the pre-primed panels! Thank you for the advice and inspiration, I really appreciate it! If I have any questions once we get cracking on it, I'll be back!
We looked into many other ideas, as well. This one seemed the simplist and most affordable! I'm glad I could be of some help and an inspiration :)
